"In 1999, I traveled to England and Norway where I immersed myself in the company of the old, elaborate
architecture of a lost era. To lay my hands upon structures that held so much history and to witness the images I
had only seen in photographs, inspired this series of paintings.
I have long been drawn to the cool granite slabs of an ancient castle, the crackled stone of a ruined statue. Perhaps
that's because I grew up in Seattle, a place considerably new by comparison, where the modern buildings and
highways are so vastly different from the charm of Europe's century old cities.
I use graphite pencil on tracing paper with a liquid thinner to create images that will evoke those memories of winter
winds, early mists, and darkening skies. This medium lends itself well to the coolness of its subjects; haunting scenes
that are caught frozen in time or within the thoughts of its viewer."
